Jellyfin without the jelly

I’m disappointed with Jellyfin. It might look good on paper, but is hands down a mediocre experience. The apps, the ecosystem, the UI feel great. What really drives me nuts though is the meta data. In a perfect world it would match 100 percent, but reality draws a different picture here.

For instance, the seasons I own for Man vs. Wild are structured different, some episodes are missing and trying to tell it about all of this is more of a nightmare. While it works out for many other shows, there is always a mismatch with meta data.

There ain’t no jellyfin without the jelly.

Who needs jellyfin?

Lazy me, I like to watch it in a convenient way, without much effort and at my finger tips.

sshfs M720q:/media /media &> /dev/null
(cd /media; DISPLAY=:0 mpv "$(fzf --exact --no-sort --reverse)")

And the best thing yet to come: It also works over ssh as a remote!

You’ll own nothing everything and be happy

In a time where barely anyone owns things anymore, self hosting my own media collection is definitely something I know to appreciate. My flat also includes a DVB-C port. I feel like with the rise of AI, going offline and watching linear tv has become a serious option again. Thanks to my wifi repeater (it has a builtin dual tuner) and Tvheadend, I’m even able to record a lot of stuff over cable. Totally for free!
